When one is pregnant there is a lot of excitement and all new mothers are in a rush to prepare for the new arrival. Everything related to the baby is bought fast and not much thought is given to safety. Well, lurking underneath many of those mattresses and bed sheets are products and chemicals which may not be safe for your baby. A crib is where your baby to be safe, secure and sound.

Over the last 2 decades we have now become of another nightmare in the baby’s room- SIDS or sudden death infant syndrome. While this puzzling disorder has caught the imagination of the industry, we still do not know what causes it or how best to prevent it. Countless babies have died and everyday, there are new reports on how best to prevent the disorder. In the beginning the disorder was thought to be related to some chemicals in the mattress or the crib. This idea soon died down and now there is belief that perhaps it is the way the babies sleep.

.

In any case, purchasing a mattress for the crib needs a little thought. This is where the baby will spend more than 70% of his/her time. And when awake the baby will play inside the crib for the other 30%. Thus, selection of a crib mattress is vital. There are two basic types of mattress for the crib- foam and innerspring. Both are good and provide excellent shape, comfort and are durable. However, one has to make sure that the mattress is the right size and fits the crib. Too small and it leaves gaps in the crib that can easily trap a baby’s head or legs. If the mattress is too soft, it can conform to the shape of the baby and result in suffocation or SIDS. So before you buy a baby mattress, do not ask for warranty first- it is irrelevant when it comes to the safety of your baby. Check for firmness and find good quality. Make sure the mattress is waterproof and also fire resistant. Today, there are many mattresses made with special antibacterial additives. This will prevent molds and bacteria from growing in the corners of the crib.

And last but not least buy allergy free products or mattresses made from organic material. These specially made mattresses are expensive but at least your baby will be safe. Buying regular furniture may be cheap but you will also spend a lot more in unnecessary medical bills for the treatment of allergies and skin rashes.

For the best quality, check to make sure that the manufacturer is a member of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). JPMA certified companies make quality goods which are safe and sound
